Gordon Park Residence

Set among raised and extended Queenslanders on a small 16 perch suburban lot, the modest brief called for additional room to the highest dwelling to accommodate a growing family and a desire to live in a relaxing and light filled house.

The redevelopment chose to embrace the deep garden and relocate the living spaces from above ground to the garden level. A narrow kitchen pavilion is located down the southern boundary into the garden to gain a Northern aspect and push it beyond the adjacent residences. This move allows it to embrace the suburban back yard and release it from the shadow of the larger adjacent properties.

The clients desire for a swimming pool reduced the already small garden. The roof of the kitchen pavilion is therefore utilised as an outdoor space where, covered by the large roof canopy, it allows a secure external space for the children to spill out to all year round.

The floor plan attempts to create a series of spaces that provide different experience and focus depending upon ones location or mood. It offers the chance for both personal and more open engagement with the house. Differing window types and use of both long and short garden views create a sense of enclosure or openness.
