Fig Tree Pocket Residence

A home in the eucalypts –  The owners have lived on the site for many years and have undertaken a significant planting and landscaping program, resulting in a mature natural suburban bushland setting that feels like it has always been.

The new house was designed to suit the retired couple and their extended family who visit and stay often.  The plan allows for all this to occur and a flexibility for the owners to run art classes and workshops in the house and site.  The landscape is punctuated with artworks and sculptures from the owners.

Massive rammed earth walls, using soil from the site anchor the home to the ground and provide a meaningful connection to the ground.  The materiality, although solid, has a softness that catches the shadows and changes during the day as the sun passes.

A roof with deep overhangs shelter the living spaces and provide shade,  protection and scale.  Within the house there are multiple places to sit and enjoy the setting depending on the time of day, or mood.  This house is not a ‘one liner’ – over time, different aspects of the site are revealed and the daily rituals of life unfold with calm and connection.
